When can I visit Aachen Cathedral?

Aachen Cathedral is normally open to visitors from 11.00 on Mondays to Fridays, from 13.00 on Saturdays and from 13.00 to 17.45 on Sundays. It closes at 6 p.m. from 1 January to 31 March, otherwise at 7p.m. During church services, the Cathedral is not open to visitors.

Do I have to pay an entry fee to visit Aachen Cathedral?

No. Admission to the Cathedral is free.

Which areas of Aachen Cathedral are accessible to the public?

The Entrance hall, the Octagon and the hexadecagon are accessible without restrictions for all visitors via the designated walking routes. Please follow the instructions of the Cathedral staff.

The Choir and the Hochmünster with the imperial throne are only accessible as part of a guided tour.

How much does a guided tour of the Cathedral cost?

Adult €5.00
Reduced €4.00 (pupils, students, persons holding a severely disabled person’s pass)
Family ticket I €6.00 (one adult with up to 4 children aged 17 and under)
Family ticket II €11.00 (two adults with up to 4 children aged 17 and under)
Group tours for up to 20 people (only upon request, see next question): €100.00 (German tours) / €120.00 (tours in other languages)

How can I book a group tour of Aachen Cathedral?

Costs of foreign language group tour: €120.00

  • No more than 20 people in a group.
  • Persons accompanying people with disabilities with a “B” in their severely disabled person’s pass may enter free of charge.
  • We do not offer special prices for tour operators.

Children, youth and school groups: €40.00 (foreign language surcharge: €20.00)

  • No more than 20 people in a group.
  • Up to two persons may accompany school classes free of charge.
  • Persons accompanying people with disabilities with a “B” in their severely disabled person’s pass may enter free of charge.

What rules apply in Aachen Cathedral?

Aachen Cathedral is a Roman Catholic Church. It is a place for worship, for individual prayer and for contemplation. It is open to everyone. We kindly ask all visitors to respect the sacred nature of the place. Please follow our house rules (German only).

Where can I find toilets?

Public toilets (€0.50) can be found in the Cathedral Courtyard next to the main entrance.

Can I get married in Aachen Cathedral?

In principle, church weddings are prepared and celebrated in the parish where one member of the bridal couple lives. Unfortunately, it is usually not possible to get married in Aachen Cathedral. Should you still wish to be married in Aachen Cathedral owing to a strong personal connection to the Cathedral, please contact a member of the Cathedral chapter who will be able to explain the applicable rules to you.

Can I have my child christened in Aachen Cathedral?

In principle, children are christened in the parish where the mother or father live. Unfortunately, it is usually not possible to have a child christened in Aachen Cathedral. Should you still wish to have your child christened in Aachen Cathedral owing to a strong personal connection to the Cathedral, please contact a member of the Cathedral chapter who will be able to explain the applicable rules to you.

Can I take pictures inside Aachen Cathedral?

If you wish to take pictures of the Cathedral’s interior, please pay €1 to the Domschweizers (security staff). Tripods, selfie sticks and flash photography are not allowed in the Cathedral.
A written permit is required for filming and taking photographs for commercial, media and academic purposes and must be presented upon request. You can request a permit from info@aachenerdom.de.

Is there barrier-free access to Aachen Cathedral?

We ask all wheelchair users to ring the bell at the entrance of the Cathedral. The Cathedral staff will be happy to assist you with our mobile, portable ramps (up to 300 kg). If you are using a power chair, access to the Cathedral is only possible via the Krämertür entrance in the Krämerstraße.

The lift in the entrance area of the Cathedral Treasury has a weight limit of 300 kg. Unfortunately, the lift cannot be used for power chairs (>300 kg) for safety reasons.

What are the opening times of the Cathedral Treasury?

The Cathedral Treasury is open from 10.00 to 18.00 Tuesday to Sunday, Mondays from 10 to 14 h.

You can buy tickets online or in person at the Cathedral Information Centre.
