In the year 2018 the 40th anniversary is celebrated with a festive week. The festival is under the motto: Aachen Cathedral. Heritage for the world. 40 years of World Cultural Heritage.
The Aachen Cathedral is a building of unique European importance, says cathedral provost Manfred von Holtum. The UNESCO Commission published this in 1978 when it was included in the list of world cultural heritage sites. “People who visit our cathedral know that Karl the Great has laid the roots for a common Europe more than 1,200 years ago.”
The festive week is opened with a solemn mass. Visitors can participate in special events during the week. The cathedral opens up unavailable places and presents itself with light accents.
Visitors can admire the throne of Charlemagne without pre-registration.
They will experience the cathedral in the light. In a fascinating game of light the story of the over 1,200-year-old building is told. Visitors will experience the cathedral in sound. An extraordinary music program is presented. Christians experience the cathedral as a pilgrim church for all generations.
The festive week is organized by the chapter of the cathedral, in cooperation with the city of Aachen.
